JUST FACE IT

If you follow DFW Medical Spa on social media (Facebook and Instagram) you know we have been going out with FACIAL specials like crazy. If you don't follow us on either media outlet, why aren't you???!!! It's the place to be!!

I digress, FACIALS.

I can't really wrap my head around why more people don't partake. They truly are so beneficial for a number of reasons. But, before we get to the benefits, I thought I would consider why some people steer clear.

FACIAL Myths. Debunked.

FACIALS HURT - While there can be some facials that require more extensive treatments, most facials, done correctly, are not painful at all. Extractions aren't the most pleasant, but done by a professional, are safer and more hygenic than when done yourself at home. Micro-needling is another one that can be a little bit uncomfortable on certain areas of the face. We don't perform this procedure without numbing your face (and neck) first. Micro-needling is such a good treatment for your collagen regrowth and the texture of your skin! Lasers are another one and an entirely different topic, but can be highly effective at producing good results. Other than those, the facials we offer are relaxing. No pain at all!

ONE AND DONE/WHERE'S THE MIRACLE? - Okay...really though - what other procedures can you think of that are a "one and done"??? Let me know what you come up with, mmmmkaaaaay.  Facials are meant to be corrective and preventative. We want to address your skin's issues and then keep you at maintenance for that happy, beautiful face of yours - this means we may start with one procedure for corrective and continue with others for maintenance or preventative. It's all part of the process ladies and gents.

I BROKE OUT FROM THE LAST FACIAL, NOT INTERESTED - If you broke out from your last facial and you didn't do a procedure that was meant to purge bacteria, most likely they used a product that your skin had a reaction to. When you aren't aware of your skin's sensitivities, some products can cause inflammation and break outs. If you let the esthetician know that you have a sensitive skin type they should treat your skin accordingly. For example, I am very sensitive under my eye area. The skin is very thin and can't handle much of any kind of product. My esthetician knows this, and does not apply any product in that area.

FACIALS MASSAGES ARE "BOUGIE" - ("Bougie - Anything that is perceived as "upscale" from a blue-collar point of view. 'Bougie' (pronounced boo'-she)  - Actually a FACIAL massage can help with the skins circulation. This aides with better absorption of the product being used or, by itself, helps promote the growth of collagen production, which in turn helps give your complexion an gorgeous glow. There is nothing boo'-she about that. Am I right??

I realize having so many different types of FACIALS to choose from can be intimidating and overwhelming. If you are like me, you can't even decide on dinner. The thing is; no two clients have the same types of skin. We treat everyone as an individual and try our best to meet those individuals' needs. Having different FACIAL treatment options is a must.

All that being said, I feel like I have tried a little bit of everything. I try to get something done at least once a month to keep up with the preventative and maintenance side of things. A lot of our clients are pretty shocked when they find out my age and I can't attribute that to just Dysport and/or Fillers, as amazing as they are. The fact that I try to take good care of my skin, treat my issues and wear sunblock, are all contributing factors.

My favorite procedure, by far, is the Micro-needling. Not necessarily because it is the most relaxing, because THAT it is not. But because I know what it is doing for my collagen and because my skin always has the best glow a few days following the procedure. My make-up looks so good and my pesky pores are so much smaller. I hate PORES, why do they exist?

Next to that, would be the last FACIAL I had done. If you follow the Spa on Instagram you know that it was actually a CUSTOM FACIAL that Megan did based on my skin's current issues. She exfoliated, hydrated, and treated it with an anti-aging peel that left my skin so smooth and so much brighter!!!

An Aquafacial (same as the Hydrafacial) is also a really good treatment to include with your FACIAL. There is nothing else that will clean out your pores better than that machine. And you can see all the "yuck" that is cleaned out at the end of the service. Pretty gross, VERY effective.

If you aren't sure what type of facial to get - try out our CUSTOM FACIALS - leave all the decision making to us.

I will even give you some good meal ideas so you can unburden yourself of having to make any important decisions for a few days. ;-)

Preventative Botox and When To Start

This is the Age You Should Start Preventative Botox, According to Dermatologist

In today's not-so-shocking news: People are officially interested in injectable, non-invasive treatments. (It's about damn time, folks.) We've recently reported that, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), an estimated 7 million injection procedures, including Botox, were performed in the last year alone. And that number just continues to rise. According to the experts, they've seen an influx of younger patients opting for preventative treatments sooner rather than later, but how soon it too soon? For the full rundown, we reached out to dermatologists across the country to nail down the exact age, if interested, to begin Botox. The takeaway? Whenever you damn well please. Yes — really.

In Yours 20s:

"My advice to patients is to start to treat lines when they begin to stick around. When you smile or frown, lines may develop during the expression. They generally go away when the face is relaxed. However, when lines start to stick around at rest, that's when you can consider getting initial Botox treatments. I personally feel that Botox is not necessary until those lines start to show at rest. In some people, this may be in the mid-twenties, while in others after 30. It is rare for someone to come in asking for Botox under the age of 25. I've found that there has been a shift in the age of women asking for Botox now, compared to even five years ago. Now more than ever, I have patients coming in asking for Botox in preparation of their thirtieth birthday. A few years ago, it was extremely rare for any woman in her twenties to be considering this option." — Joshua Zeichner, the director of cosmetic and clinical research at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City

How Much Botox Do I Really Need?

New clients seem to ask the same question in regards to their Botox treatment: "How much Botox do I really need?"

The answer to this question is different for everyone.

The amount of Botox a client will need is dependent on several different factors. Most of the time, these factors are different for each individual that comes in. The great thing is you can have a Botox treatment customized to your personal needs and wants.

A lot of the customized treatments will depend on how may areas of the face the patient is interested in treating. That, along with the following characteristics, will help determine how many units of Botox you will need in order to achieve the results that you are looking for.

Individual Aesthetic Goals: While most people prefer some sort of movement on the forehead, there are others that prefer none at all.

Different Muscle Strengths: Someone that has stronger forehead muscles will require more Botox than someone with less prominent forehead muscles.

Different face shapes and sizes: A person with a larger forehead will require more units of Botox to halt motion than a person with a smaller forehead. Some people have bunny lines where others do not. Others have more established crows feet compared to some.

Metabolism: Surprisingly,  the rate of a persons' metabolism can directly effect how long Botox will last. The faster the metabolism, the faster a patient will burn through it and the more you will require treatment.

Lastly, we all have budgets, right? If you are on a budget and limited to how much Botox you can get,  focus on the area that bothers you the most. You are most likely going to see better results that way rather than spreading the product thin throughout your forehead.

Below are Allergan's recommendations for Botox. Keep in mind these are only recommendations and may not be enough for you in the specific area or more than what you may need.

Recommendations are base starting points
Botox can take over a week or more to see the full results
Botox is a muscle relaxer, not a wrinkle remover.

Frown Lines - 20 to 50 units
Forehead Lines - 20 to 40 units
Crow’s Feet - 20 to 50 units per eye
Bunny Lines - 5 units per side
Gummy Smile - 2.5 units
Lip Lines Upper - 1.5 units

Let's Talk About Faces Baby....

What We Can Do To Help You Age Gracefully
  1. “The Eyes (Used to) Have It” – Over the years, the forehead muscles will lengthen allowing the eyebrows to sit lower over the eye. This heaviness can make the eyes look tired or angry. A definite 11 may be noticed between the brows. A small amount of Botox may be used to lift tired looking eyebrows and restore the brow line to its original position.  Many people develop a “trough” beneath the eye that looks dark and sunken.   There are a couple of ways to address this issue. A small amount of filler may be placed gently in this area to lift the sunken area and rejuvenate the under eye area. Another way to address this problem is with skin tightening  procedures such as the Pelleve treatment that uses radiofrequency to tighten skin.
  2. “Sad Mouth”–  As the face ages, there is a natural volume loss at the corners of the mouth. Amazingly, this can be fixed in an afternoon with a small amount of Juvederm to the corners of the mouth. Lips will look no different, but the frown is eliminated!
  3. Temple Trouble – Have you noticed that your temples are getting skinny? That is a common issue that is easily fixed with adding a small amount of Voluma injectable filler to “plump” the area back to normal. (Who ever thought our temples would be something to think about??)
  4. Turn the Other Cheek! – Have you noticed that your face is flatter than it used to be? Have you noticed jowls that would put Uga to shame? This is something that we notice due to lengthening of the cheek muscles that support the “apple” of the cheek and loss of facial fat over the years which affects even the roundest faces. We have some wonderful ways to help with this problem. Voluma is an injectable filler that will add volume to the cheek, not only bringing back some of the lost volume, but pulling back some of the lax skin creating a “facelift” effect. If you are not interested in injectables, we can discuss our Pelleve treatments that will lift and tighten your entire face and neck in 3 to 5 sessions using gentle treatments that yield no downtime.
  5. Lets Talk Lips….! A majority of the clients that seek services do not want to look like they have had ANYTHING done. Most of our clients want to look like they had a great night’s sleep and bought a new lipstick. When some clients hear the words lip filler, they panic. My happiest clients are those that suddenly don’t have to worry about feathering lipstick, “smoker’s pleats”( that seem to unjustly happen to non-smokers even more frequently), and lips that have rolled down into the mouth. A tiny amount of filler can repair these issues and no one will really be able to tell why you look less “drawn”. Of course, those who enjoy fuller lips are welcome! You just have to convince us that you really want fuller lips. We are seriously conservative.
  6. Now About The Neck! – Often times the last thing we think would be the first thing to go, the neck deserves a category of its own. The Pelleve is a radio frequency that can tighten your skin. All the lasers (IPL, Clearlift, Pixel) we do regenerate Collagen, which can promote a smoother neck over time.
  7. Seeing Spots?  First of all, not all brown spots are the same. Your patch may be caused by too much fun in the sun, hormones, or acne. No matter how they came about, they are a nuisance and can be aging to the eye. Depending on the type of brown you have, we have many answers for you. Our Pixel and IPL Laser Treatments are a great way to get rid of your unwanted brown spots.
  8. Softening of the Jaw Line– As we age, our once firm jaw line can get soft and undefined. Treatments like Pelleve can give you back that more youthful profile. Fillers, such as Voluma, can also be used to make the line more prominent and youthful.
  9. Thinning Lashes and Brows – Yet another effect of aging is the loss of hair in the lashes and brows. Sure you can pencil in brows and have lashes applied, but think of the joy of having your own hair grow again! Our Nutra Luxe Lashes is Physician formulated and Ophthalmologist tested. It is a favorite of a lot of our clients and it does not change the natural color of your eye. After applying every evening for about 8 weeks, clients notice brows and lashes that are thicker and darker. After the initial growing period, you will need to use the product a few times a week to keep things “fertilized.”
